Open Message from a concerned American to the U.K...

As an American who regularly visits the UK to enjoy the simple pleasures of eating in pubs where they know where their meat is sourced and their vegetables are grown. I love the fact that many of your butchers take pride in the fantastic quality of their meat. Even your supermarkets, the best of them at any rate, pay attention to welfare standards and sustainability.

It’s not the same in the United States where quality butchers are scarcer than hen’s teeth. And in the US most animals are raised in heartbreaking feed-lots and never graze on lush pastures.

Food safety is defined by the World Health Organisation as ‘thehandling, preparation, and storage of food in ways that prevent food borne illness along the entire chain from farm to plate. According to the WHO that includes guarding food from chemical contamination.

England’s Lake District is a magnificent landscape. Sharp edged mountains glower over fairy-tale dales and heather clad fells. It has enthralled some of the country’s greatest poets, painters and writers for centuries.The dales are dotted with neat, stone farmsteads placed on a graph of pristine dry-stone walls enclosing small home pastures.

They contain a unique community of shepherding and hill farming folk. The fells and mountainsides above provide grazing for their traditional flocks of smoky grey Herdwick sheep. Beatrix Potter is the writer most associated with this special heritage so when Bohemian Mojo travelled to the Lake District a visit to her home at Hill Top seemed more than appropriate.

For a couple of years or so we at Bohemianmojo have been discussing our reservations about so-called sustainable wind power and solar energy. We are huge fans of any well thought out efforts to harness offshore tidal or wave power. But we have been very suspicious about the much-vaunted green credentials of the other two although decided not to give it voice while the jury was still out.

We’ll talk about wind power in a future posting but a couple of disturbing dispatches about solar energy have prompted this report. The first is a stark warning from the Chinese authorities on the truly gigantic pollution penalty from solar arrays once they fall out of use.

It seems we may have reached Peak Agriculture with a decline in the amount of land being farmed globally, according to an article in the UK’s New Scientist magazine. In their recent cover article (August 12th 2017) the author suggests that every two years a farmed area roughly the size of the UK is abandoned to the wild; yet we are still producing roughly the same amount of food.
